What Is A Hot Toddy?

A hot toddy is a soothing homemade tea that can temporarily help relieve symptoms of a cold, sore throat, cough, and congestion. It is made by combining hot water with black tea, honey, lemon, cinnamon, and whiskey.

The hot water and steam help soothe the throat and ease congestion, while honey coats the throat, and lemon provides vitamin C. Whiskey helps ease pain in the throat and acts as a mild sedative to help you sleep.

A cup of hot toddy is not going to cure your cold but it will definitely help alleviate your symptoms and help you get relief for a few hours.

Variations

You would be surprised by how many hot toddy variations there are! I’ve made this with apple cider vinegar, ginger, cloves, and even cayenne pepper. You can also use other types of alcohol instead of whiskey as well. I’ve had it with tequila, rum, brandy, and gin. If alcohol is not your thing, you can try a mock toddy as well.

Storage

This hot toddy recipe should not be stored because you want to consume the ingredients while they are still fresh to get all the benefits right away.

Who Should Not Drink This Hot Toddy

Please do not give this tea to infants under 12 months old. It is advisable to not drink this tea or omit the alcohol if you are dehydrated, have a weakened immune system, or taking medications that should not be mixed with alcohol.
