How Does Coconut Oil Grow Hair?
Let’s get this straight, coconut oil does not directly cause hair growth. However, if you’ve noticed, coconut oil is a main ingredient in most hair products. That’s because it helps with hair health which is important for hair growth, let’s break it down:
Circulation – One of the main reasons why we experience hair loss and brittle hair is poor circulation in the scalp. By massaging coconut oil into your scalp, you increase blood flow into your hair follicles. It’s like breathing life back into hair.
The more circulation happening in your scalp makes your hair follicles stronger and prevent your hair from breaking.
Moisture & Hydration – a healthy hair contains 10-30% water depending on the hair type. In most cases, dry air, excess sun exposure, some hair products, styling tools, and poor hydration can cause your hair to lose water. By using coconut oil, it locks in moisture and keep your hair hydrated, therefore, reducing breakage.
Apart from locking in moisture, coconut oil contains lauric acid which penetrates the hair shaft and nourishes the hair and keep it healthy.
Protects The Scalp – finally, coconut oil has amazing anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties which keeps the scalp clean from fungal and bacterial infections.
Coconut Oil Hair Mask For Hair Growth Recipe
What You’ll Need:
- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (I use organic)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of honey
How To Make Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Combine the coconut oil, lemon juice, and honey into a clean bowl and whisk together until evenly mixed. Wash your hair and divide it into 4 parts. Apply the coconut oil hair mask onto your scalp and using your fingertips, begin to massage gently.
This will improve circulation in the scalp and stimulate new hair growth. Leave the mask in for 30 minutes and rinse with warm water before using your favorite shampoo and conditioner. I use herbal products on my hair and you should too.
Use this hair mask once per week depending on your hair type. Read the usage guidelines below:
Usage Guidelines
Colored treated hair – use this hair mask twice a month and limit the time to 15 minutes because lemon juice can make hair more sensitive to sunlight. You can also use this mask without adding the lemon juice.
Dry sensitive scalp – lemon juice causes dryness and irritation for people with sensitive scalp. You can limit the application time to 20 minutes twice a month, or omit the lemon juice altogether.
Oily hair – use this hair mask twice per month if you have oily hair because coconut oil can cause oil buildup in the scalp.
Who Should Not Use Coconut Oil Hair Mask
People with sensitive scalp, coconut oil allergies, low porosity hair, thin hair, fine hair, or those with acne prone skin and protein sensitive skin should not use this coconut oil hair mask. That’s because coconut oil is heavy and can cause buildup, greasiness, and clogged pores.
