How This Thyme Cough Syrup Works

Thyme – contains anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. It also contains flavonoids that helps relax throat muscles and reduce coughing episodes. When used for wet coughs, it acts as an expectorant and clears out mucus from the lungs.

Raw honey – similar to thyme, honey soothes the throat lining and relaxes the muscles in the throat which in turns reduces coughing. It also has anti microbial and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for centuries to treat cough.

Lemon – is a great source of vitamin C which is needed to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and help your body fight cold symptoms.

Variations

I’ve tried this thyme syrup with other ingredients and it works just as well. Instead of water, I sometimes use olive oil and add in ginger and turmeric root. Olive oil and turmeric are great for reducing inflammation in the throat lining while ginger relaxes the airway muscles and reduces coughing fits.

Note: you can also use rosemary, oregano, or sage instead of thyme to make this syrup.
